    🔬 UX Concept Testing. How to test your UX design without spending too much time and effort polishing mock-ups and prototypes ↓ ✅ Concept testing is an early real-world check of design ideas. ✅ It happens before a new product/feature is designed and built. ✅ It helps you find an idea that will meet user and business needs. ✅ Always low-fidelity, always pre-launch, always involves real users. 🚫 Testing, not validation: ideas are not confirmed, but evaluated. ✅ What people think, do, say and feel are often very different things. ✅ You’ll need 5 users per feature or a group of features. ✅ You will discover 85% of usability problems with 5 users. ✅ You will discover 100% of UX problems with 20–40 users. 🚫 Poor surveys are a dangerous, unreliable tool to assess design. 🚫 Never ask users if they prefer one design over the other. ✅ Ask what adjectives or qualities they connect with a design. ✅ Tree testing: ask users to find content in your navigation tree. ✅ Kano model survey: get user’s sentiment about new features. ✅ First impression test: ask to rate a concept against your keywords. ✅ Preference test: ask to pick a concept that better conveys keywords. ✅ Competitive testing: like preference test, but with competitor’s design. ✅ 5-sec test: show for 5 secs, then ask questions to answer from memory. ✅ Monadic testing: segment users, test concepts in-depth per segment. ✅ Concept testing isn’t one-off, but a continuous part of the UX process. In design process, we often speak about “validation” of the new design. Yet as Kara Pernice rightfully noted, the word is confusing and introduces bias. It suggests that we know it works, and are looking for data to prove that. Instead, test, study, watch how people use it, see where the design succeeds and fails. We don’t need polished mock-ups or advanced prototypes to test UX concepts. The earlier you bring your work to actual users, the less time you’ll spend on designing and building a solution that doesn’t meet user needs and doesn’t have a market fit. And that’s where concept testing can be extremely valuable.     UX Designers, So, you've started using AI to see if you can leverage it to amplify what you can do. The answer is yes, but... If you've never been part of the (SDLC) or (PDLC). You'll get through it, but it won't be easy and not to fun at first. If you're in a well established company with a huge design system. Suddenly adding in AI might make life a real pain. It depends on how adaptive the company and others are. If you're starting something from scratch. Well, now you can do whatever you want to. This is where the fun, frustration and learning comes in. Buckle Up.. To give you an example. I've been working on something and it's almost ready for people to test. I was going through and manually testing the user flows. As something was found. Claude inside of Cursor would find the issue after I point it out. It suggests a fix. I review and approve and continue from there. This was taking a lot of time as you might imagine. So, this morning at 2am with what felt like sand in my eyes. "There has to be a way I can automate this..?" Prompt: As you know. I've been testing the user flows manually, and we've been fixing the issues along the way. Do you know if a way that we can automate this without having to send out various emails, and just do this internally? When you find an issue it gets documented in a backlog and we then work those, and run the test again? I got answers. I selected one I liked (playwright) and combined it with ReactFlow so it was visual. Created a dashboard for it. Long story short. I can now run 100% automated user flow tests, see them in action in real-time, see where the issues are and then go fix them. All done in less than 6 hours and at $0 except for my time. But using AI, we can start it in design phase Stage - 1: WHAT: Interactions, font-size, contrast, accessibility checks etc. can be validated using GPT-4o / Claude / Gemini (LLM design review prompts) - WAVE (accessibility validation) How we use them: Design files → exported automatically → checked by accessibility scanners → run through LLM agents to evaluate interaction states, spacing, labels, copy clarity, and UX risks. Stage - 3: Tools: • SonarQube + Semgrep (static checks) • LLM test reviewers (custom prompt agents) • GitHub PR integration How we use them: Every test case or automation file passes through: SonarQube: static rule checks LLM quality gate that flags: - missing assertions - incomplete edge coverage - ambiguous expected outcomes - inconsistent naming or structure We focus on strategy -> AI handles structural review. Stage - 4: Tools: • Playwright, WebDriver + REST Assured • GitHub Copilot for scaffold generation • OpenAPI/Swagger + AI for API test generation How we use them: Engineers describe intent → Copilot generates: ✔ Page objects / fixtures ✔ API client definitions ✔ Custom commands ✔ Assertion scaffolding SDETs optimise logic instead of writing boilerplate. THE RESULT - Test design time reduced 60% - Visual regressions detected with near-pixel accuracy - Review overhead for SDETs significantly reduced - AI hasn’t replaced SDETs.     Designers, when building digital products, speed is exciting, but speed without validation can lead you in the wrong direction. Recently, I decided to test something. I wanted to see how quickly I could go from idea to working prototype using Replit. Within minutes, I had a simple product flow live: → A sign-up page → A demo booking system → and a basic user journey that felt functional. From a building perspective, it was incredibly fast. But here’s something I’ve learned over time as a designer: a working prototype doesn’t automatically mean a usable experience. Just because we understand the flow doesn’t mean users will. So the next step was validation. I used Lyssna to test the prototype with people who actually match the target audience: UX designers, UX researchers, and tech-savvy professionals in the UK who would realistically book a session. Instead of guessing, the test helped answer questions like: → Do users understand the flow without any explanation? → Where do they hesitate or feel uncertain? → Does the experience match what they expect? The results were encouraging. Most participants navigated the flow confidently, which validated the core concept. But the testing also revealed small usability issues I hadn’t noticed while designing, the kind of insights you almost never catch without observing real users. That experience reinforced something important for me: Rapid prototyping helps you move fast. User testing ensures you're moving in the right direction. The best product workflows combine both.     As UX researchers, we often encounter a common challenge: deciding whether one design truly outperforms another. Maybe one version of an interface feels faster or looks cleaner. But how do we know if those differences are meaningful - or just the result of chance? To answer that, we turn to statistical comparisons. When comparing numeric metrics like task time or SUS scores, one of the first decisions is whether you’re working with the same users across both designs or two separate groups. If it's the same users, a paired t-test helps isolate the design effect by removing between-subject variability. For independent groups, a two-sample t-test is appropriate, though it requires more participants to detect small effects due to added variability. Binary outcomes like task success or conversion are another common case. If different users are tested on each version, a two-proportion z-test is suitable. But when the same users attempt tasks under both designs, McNemar’s test allows you to evaluate whether the observed success rates differ in a meaningful way. Task time data in UX is often skewed, which violates assumptions of normality. A good workaround is to log-transform the data before calculating confidence intervals, and then back-transform the results to interpret them on the original scale. It gives you a more reliable estimate of the typical time range without being overly influenced by outliers. Statistical significance is only part of the story. Once you establish that a difference is real, the next question is: how big is the difference? For continuous metrics, Cohen’s d is the most common effect size measure, helping you interpret results beyond p-values. For binary data, metrics like risk difference, risk ratio, and odds ratio offer insight into how much more likely users are to succeed or convert with one design over another. Before interpreting any test results, it’s also important to check a few assumptions: are your groups independent, are the data roughly normal (or corrected for skew), and are variances reasonably equal across groups? Fortunately, most statistical tests are fairly robust, especially when sample sizes are balanced. If you're working in R, I’ve included code in the carousel. This walkthrough follows the frequentist approach to comparing designs. I’ll also be sharing a follow-up soon on how to tackle the same questions using Bayesian methods.

    We often assume that testing our UX designs is a time-consuming process because usability testing usually involves detailed prototypes and extensive sessions. But there’s a faster way: comprehension-based usability testing. This method focuses on validating whether users understand the information on the screen without requiring a fully interactive prototype. It’s all about testing if your design communicates effectively. By engaging real users and asking open-ended questions about your prototype, you can quickly identify misunderstandings and address assumptions you might have made as a designer. The key is to focus on qualitative feedback from unbiased users—people who haven’t seen the design before. This helps you spot areas where the design may fail to communicate as intended, all without the need for exhaustive testing. It’s a lean, practical way to ensure your design speaks clearly to your audience.

    Recently, someone shared results from a UX test they were proud of. A new onboarding flow had reduced task time, based on a very small handful of users per variant. The result wasn’t statistically significant, but they were already drafting rollout plans and asked what I thought of their “victory.” I wasn’t sure whether to critique the method or send flowers for the funeral of statistical rigor. Here’s the issue. With such a small sample, the numbers are swimming in noise. A couple of fast users, one slow device, someone who clicked through by accident... any of these can distort the outcome. Sampling variability means each group tells a slightly different story. That’s normal. But basing decisions on a single, underpowered test skips an important step: asking whether the effect is strong enough to trust. This is where statistical significance comes in. It helps you judge whether a difference is likely to reflect something real or whether it could have happened by chance. But even before that, there’s a more basic question to ask: does the difference matter? This is the role of Minimum Detectable Effect, or MDE. MDE is the smallest change you would consider meaningful, something worth acting on. It draws the line between what is interesting and what is useful. If a design change reduces task time by half a second but has no impact on satisfaction or behavior, then it does not meet that bar. If it noticeably improves user experience or moves key metrics, it might. Defining your MDE before running the test ensures that your study is built to detect changes that actually matter. MDE also helps you plan your sample size. Small effects require more data. If you skip this step, you risk running a study that cannot answer the question you care about, no matter how clean the execution looks. If you are running UX tests, begin with clarity. Define what kind of difference would justify action. Set your MDE. Plan your sample size accordingly. When the test is done, report the effect size, the uncertainty, and whether the result is both statistically and practically meaningful. And if it is not, accept that. Call it a maybe, not a win. Then refine your approach and try again with sharper focus.

    A few years back, I was working with an e-commerce client who was struggling with low conversion rates. We decided to take a deep dive into user behavior to identify pain points. Using Hotjar, we were able to see exactly how users were interacting with their website. We noticed that many users were dropping off during the checkout process. By analyzing heatmaps and user recordings, we identified areas where the checkout flow could be simplified. We used Google Optimize to test different checkout variations, such as reducing form fields and streamlining the payment process. These small UX improvements led to an 17% increase in conversions.
